Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a cupcake tin with paper liners. Prepare your favorite cupcake batter, filling each liner about two-thirds full. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely before decorating.
To make the perfect fluffy frosting, beat 1 cup of softened butter in a bowl until creamy. Gradually add 4 cups of powdered sugar and continue beating until smooth and fluffy. Add 2-3 tablespoons of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and beat again until well combined. Divide the frosting into separate bowls and tint each bowl with different pastel colors.
Cut the top off each cupcake horizontally, creating a flat surface. Slice the tops in half to form the butterfly wings. Place a dollop of frosting on one side of each cupcake to act as glue, then attach the wings at an angle. Repeat for all cupcakes.
Using a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle, pipe a border of frosting along the edge of each cupcake, resembling the butterfly's body. Make fluffy swirls of frosting along the center of the body. Add colorful sprinkles or edible pearls to give your butterfly cakes some extra sparkle. Feel free to get creative and experiment with different designs!
To complete the butterfly look, insert two small chocolate or licorice sticks into the frosting near the butterfly's head to represent its antennae. You can also use mini chocolate chips for a whimsical touch. Finally, use edible icing pens to draw eyes and a mouth on each butterfly. Let your imagination take flight!
