Take note
Be careful not to burn yourself while handling hot pastries. Also, don't be surprised if your friends start requesting Elf Ears for every occasion!
In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Cut in 1/2 cup of cold unsalted butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add 1/4 cup of ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Form the dough into a ball, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled dough into a thin rectangle. Using a pastry cutter or a sharp knife, cut the rectangle into long, thin strips approximately 1 inch wide. Then, cut a small slit in the middle of each strip, and twist one end of the strip through the slit to create the shape of an elf ear. Place the shaped pastries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake the Elf Ears in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp. Keep an eye on them as they bake, as they can brown quickly towards the end. Once done, remove the pastries from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for a few minutes.
While the Elf Ears are still warm, generously dust them with powdered sugar using a sieve or a shaker. The sugar dusting adds a touch of magic and sweetness to these delightful pastries. Allow them to cool completely before serving.
