Take note
Please exercise caution while handling hot objects and using sharp tools. Also, make sure to let the cake cool completely before decorating.
Preheat your oven to the temperature specified on the cake mix box. Follow the instructions on the box to prepare the batter. Pour the batter into a football-shaped cake pan. If you don't have a football-shaped pan, you can use a round cake pan and shape the cake into a football using a template. Bake the cake according to the time and temperature indicated on the box. Once done, remove it from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
Once the cake has cooled, place it on a serving platter. Use a serrated knife or a cake leveler to trim the top of the cake to create a flat surface. Apply a thin layer of chocolate frosting all over the cake to lock in the crumbs. This is known as a crumb coat. Let the crumb coat set for about 10 minutes. Then, apply a thicker layer of chocolate frosting to cover the entire cake. Smooth the frosting using a cake spatula or a bench scraper. Don't worry about making it perfect, a little texture is okay for a football!
