Unlock the sweet magic with our 'caramelized onions' recipe. Transform any dish into a caramelized delight with these flavorful gems!
Take note
Be careful not to burn the onions while caramelizing. Keep an eye on them and stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Peel and slice the onions into thin, even strips. Aim for about half an inch wide. If you want shorter caramelized onions, go for a smaller size.
Place a large skillet or frying pan over medium-low heat. Add a splash of cooking oil or butter and let it melt.
Add the sliced onions to the pan and give them a stir to coat them with the melted oil. Spread them out evenly.
Now comes the waiting game. Allow the onions to cook undisturbed for about 20 minutes. This gives them time to soften and start to become golden brown.
After 20 minutes, give the onions a stir. Sprinkle a pinch of salt over them to help draw out the moisture and enhance the caramelization.
Continue cooking the onions over low heat for about 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally. They will gradually turn a deep, rich brown color.
For extra flavor, you can add a splash of balsamic vinegar or a sprinkle of brown sugar towards the end of the cooking time. Stir well to incorporate.
Once the onions reach your desired caramelization level, remove them from the heat. Let them cool slightly before using them to enhance your favorite dishes!
