Caution: This recipe involves working with yeast and requires some dough handling skills. Be patient and gentle when working with the dough to ensure the perfect twist.
In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 2 ¼ teaspoons of instant yeast. Mix well and set aside.
In a small saucepan, heat ¾ cup of milk, ¼ cup of unsalted butter, and ¼ cup of water until warm (about 110°F or 43°C). Remove from heat and pour into the dry ingredients. Stir until the mixture forms a soft dough.
Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, gradually add more flour a little at a time until manageable.
Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
After the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a floured surface. Roll it out into a rectangle shape, about ¼ inch thick.
Melt ¼ cup of unsalted butter and brush it evenly over the rolled-out dough. In a separate bowl, combine ½ cup of granulated sugar and 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon. Sprinkle the mixture over the buttered dough, covering it completely.
Starting from one of the longer sides, tightly roll the dough into a log. Once rolled, carefully cut the log in half lengthwise, leaving about an inch intact at the top. Gently twist the two halves together, keeping the cut sides exposed.
Transfer the twisted dough onto a lined baking sheet. Shape it into an oval or circular shape and tuck the ends underneath. Cover with a towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Bake the colossal cinnamon twist for approximately 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Slice and serve warm for a delightful treat!
