Take note
Be sure to use fresh ingredients and handle raw fish with caution. Also, resist the temptation to take too many sushi breaks while assembling your cake - it might disappear before it's even done!
First things first, we need a solid foundation for our Sushi Cake - the rice! Rinse 2 cups of sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Cook the rice according to the package instructions, and once done, let it cool slightly before transferring it to a large mixing bowl.
Now, it's time to give our rice some flavor. In a small saucepan, combine 1/2 cup of rice vinegar, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Heat the mixture over low heat until the sugar and salt dissolve. Gently pour the seasoned vinegar over the cooked rice and use a rice paddle or spatula to mix it in. Be careful not to mash the rice!
Let your creativity shine as you choose your sushi fillings! Slice up some fresh sushi-grade fish, like salmon and tuna, into thin strips. You can also include ingredients like cucumber, avocado, and even crab sticks. Prepare them in bite-sized pieces to make assembling easier.
To shape our Sushi Cake, we'll need a round cake mold. Line the inside of the mold with plastic wrap, making sure the entire surface is covered. This will make it easier to remove the cake once it's assembled.
Now comes the fun part - assembling the layers! Start by spooning a layer of sushi rice into the bottom of the lined cake mold. Use the back of a spoon to press it down evenly. This layer will serve as the base of our cake, so make sure it's compact and smooth.
Time to add some colorful and delicious fillings! Arrange a layer of your chosen ingredients on top of the rice. Get creative with the placement and mix different fillings for a visually appealing cake. Fill in any gaps with more rice to ensure each bite is packed with flavor.
Repeat steps 5 and 6 to create additional layers of rice and fillings. The number of layers will depend on the size of your mold and the amount of ingredients. Aim for at least 3 layers to make your Sushi Cake look impressive.
Once you've assembled all the layers, gently press down on the cake to compact it. Cover the mold with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator to chill for at least 1 hour. This will help the flavors meld together and make the cake easier to slice.
When it's time to unveil your creation, carefully remove the plastic wrap from the top of the mold. Place a serving plate over the mold and quickly flip it upside down. Tap the bottom of the mold to release the cake, and slowly lift off the mold and plastic wrap. Voila! Your Sushi Cake is ready to impress. Get creative with toppings like sesame seeds, tobiko (fish roe), and edible flowers for a final touch of elegance.
