In a bowl, mix together 1 and 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup of warm milk, 1 beaten egg, and 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, and knead the dough until smooth. Let it rise for about 1 hour, covered with a clean kitchen towel.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use a round cookie cutter or a glass to cut out circles. Place the circles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Carefully slide a few cronuts into the hot oil using a slotted spoon. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove them from the oil, and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
Using a piping bag fitted with a small round tip, gently fill each cronut with your preferred filling, such as pastry cream, fruit jam, or chocolate ganache. Insert the tip into the side of the cronut and squeeze until the filling starts to ooze out slightly. Repeat for all cronuts.
