In a mixing bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup of cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. In a separate bowl, beat together 1/2 cup of melted butter, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1 cup of buttermilk. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until well combined.
In a small saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of butter. Add 1/4 cup of heavy cream and 1/2 cup of whiskey. Stir until the mixture is smooth and warm. Set aside to cool slightly. Once cooled, use a cupcake corer or a small spoon to remove the centers of the cupcakes. Fill each cavity with a teaspoonful of the whiskey filling.
In a mixing bowl, beat together 1 cup of softened butter and 3 cups of powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add 2 tablespoons of whiskey and a splash of vanilla extract. Mix until well combined. Transfer the whiskey buttercream to a piping bag fitted with a star-shaped tip.
Pipe generous swirls of whiskey buttercream onto each cupcake, covering the whiskey-filled centers. You can also get creative and add colorful sprinkles, edible glitter, or even miniature magic wands on top of the frosting for an extra enchanting touch.
