Take note
Be careful not to overstuff the dough with the filling, or it might ooze out during baking. Also, make sure to let the kouign-amann cool slightly before devouring, as the filling can be hot!
Prepare the classic kouign-amann dough by combining flour, sugar, salt, yeast, butter, and water in a mixing bowl. Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic. Let it rise until doubled in size.
Decide on the filling for your twisted kouign-amann. You can go with classic cinnamon sugar, or get creative with chocolate, nutella, or even a fruity jam. The choice is yours!
Roll out the risen dough on a floured surface into a rectangle. Spread your chosen filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
Starting from the shorter side, tightly roll the dough into a log. Pinch the seam to seal it. Using a sharp knife, cut the log into individual pieces, about 1 inch wide.
Take each piece of cut dough and twist it a few times. Place the twisted pieces into a greased baking dish, making sure to leave some space between them for expansion.
Preheat your oven to the appropriate temperature and bake the kouign-amann until golden brown and deliciously caramelized. Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
