Add a touch of whimsy to your Victorian tea cakes with homemade edible roses. Easy to make and guaranteed to impress!
Take note
Be careful with the hot sugar syrup when making the rose petals. Make sure to let them cool completely before handling.
In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar with 1/4 cup of water. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves and the mixture comes to a boil. Let it simmer for 2 minutes.
Take a small food-safe paintbrush and dip it into the warm sugar syrup. Paint a thin layer of syrup onto a silicone baking mat or parchment paper. Repeat this process to create as many rose petals as you need. Let them cool completely.
Once the rose petals have cooled, carefully peel them off the baking mat. Place a petal in front of you, curved side down. Take another petal and overlap it slightly with the first one, sticking them together with a small dab of the sugar syrup. Continue adding petals, slightly overlapping each time, until you have a rose shape. Let it dry for 5 minutes.
Gently dust the edible roses with a touch of edible gold or edible glitter for a luxurious look. Let them dry completely before using them to decorate your Victorian tea cakes.
