Be careful when handling the orange peels as they may be slippery or sticky. Also, make sure to use organic oranges to ensure no pesticides or waxes are present on the peels.
Start by carefully peeling the oranges, making sure to remove as much pith as possible. Cut the peels into thin strips or bite-sized pieces, whichever you prefer.
Place the orange peels in a pot of boiling water and let them cook for about 5 minutes. This will help remove any bitterness and soften the peels.
After 5 minutes, drain the orange peels and rinse them with cold water. Repeat this blanching process two more times to further reduce the bitterness.
In a separate pot, combine equal parts water and granulated sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved.
Add the blanched orange peels into the sugar syrup and let them simmer for about 30-40 minutes, or until the peels become translucent. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Once the orange peels are translucent, remove them from the syrup using a slotted spoon. Place them on a wire rack or parchment paper to cool and dry slightly. Roll each piece in granulated sugar to coat evenly.
Allow the coated orange peels to dry completely at room temperature for a few hours or overnight. This will give them a nice chewy texture with a sugary crust.
Once the Orange Peel Candies are fully dry, indulge in their citrusy goodness! Store them in an airtight container for up to two weeks (if they last that long!).
